Since October 8, 2026, Airbnb has been offering some guests "Weather Protection," a rain-triggered insurance add-on. Here's what it actually covers, and what it means for you as a host.
What it is
It's an optional, paid insurance product offered to guests at checkout, or afterward via the "Add to your trip" button on their reservation. Guests purchase it themselves — it's not something Airbnb gives away for free.
The insurer is Chubb European Group SE, not Airbnb itself.
Who's eligible
Guests who live in one of these 10 countries: Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and Sweden. It covers both their domestic and international trips, not just stays located in those countries.
How it works
It's parametric insurance: no claim to file, no documents to submit. For each day of the stay, rainfall at the property's location is measured using independent data (radar, satellite, weather reports).
The payout triggers when rainfall reaches at least 1.5 mm in an hour, between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. local time, for the minimum number of hours listed on the guest's certificate.
If the threshold is met, the guest automatically receives between €50 and €1,000 for that day. They get an email or notification with a link to Chubb's payment portal — no action required on their part.
It only covers rain. Wind, snow, or hail aren't included.
What this changes for you as a host
Nothing, directly. It's an insurance product between the guest and Chubb: it doesn't affect your payout, your cancellation policy, or your liability for bad weather during a stay.
What it might actually help with: if a guest reaches out about rain ruining part of their trip, you can point them to this coverage instead of handling a refund request yourself. It may also, indirectly, reduce the number of weather-related complaints you get as a host.
FAQ
Do I need to do anything for my guests to have access to it?
No. The option shows up automatically at checkout or on the reservation if the guest is eligible (residing in one of the 10 covered countries). There's nothing to activate on your end.
Does it affect my payout if a guest gets paid out?
No. The payout comes from Chubb to the guest. Your Airbnb payout isn't affected.
Does it also cover hosts for weather-related booking losses?
No, based on the sources reviewed, it only applies to guests and only to rainfall during their stay.
In which countries can guests buy this coverage?
Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and Sweden — based on the guest's country of residence, not the property's location.
